"Whatever you can do Or think you can, begin it Boldness has power, and genius And magic in it." ...Goethe
My name is Andy Barney, Founder of the "Training Soccer Legends" method of soccer coaching. 18 years ago I founded the Legends Soccer club in Kansas City and began to question the conventional team oriented coaching philosophy I had adhered to for the previous 15 years of my coaching career. As a result of many years of study, analysis, trial and error I have created a whole new way to coach the game that has been proven to work by the many Legends Soccer Club graduates who have moved on to play at the higher levels.
What you will learn from the "Training Soccer Legends" method will be a unique and vastly more beneficial way of developing players. Indeed your players will gain the ability to dominate opponents and make the big plays that enable them to play at a higher level. However, you will need to open your mind to a whole new way of training players which conflicts with your previous perspective. Even Bill Gates had a narrow vision of the future in 1981 when he made the statement "640K ought to be enough computer memory for anybody." The unique approach outlined here will challenge your open mindedness to new ideas and your ability to reason.
The "Training Soccer Legends" approach is unique because we only teach deceptive dribbling and shooting technique.
It is unique because we spend all our time focusing on the 1 v 1 skills of beating a player and finishing in the clutch.
It is unique because the final stage of our camp & club practice training program involves training situations with a maximum of four players to 1 ball i.e. 2 v 2. It is unique because until age 18 our players will not practice in numbers of 3 v 3 or greater. It is unique because, when compared to the philosophies of US Soccer & other National Coaching Schools around the world, this approach is heresy.
However, the "Training Soccer Legends" approach has many similarities to the street soccer environments that the world's greatest team players learned to play in and it is the only way to develop true legendary skill and speed of thought. This "Training Soccer Legends" curriculum is truly unique because it relates soccer skill development to the Physical Education principles of Transfer of Training, Economy of Training & Specificity of Training.
It utilizes accepted practice in childhood education and child psychology.
It profits from the benefits of Skill Compounding.
It involves the two skills that are easiest to practice at home and most motivating to players, i.e. dribbling and shooting.
It focuses on the skills that develop great self-belief and leadership.
It emphasizes risk and the individual win instead of safety first and the team statistic.
It trains the total soccer player not the limited positional player. It develops the ability vital to making big plays and essential for guaranteeing selection to the higher levels of play, i.e. state select and college teams.
It refutes the instant gratification "win now pay later" mentality that permeates modern society and youth soccer.
It demands great failure on the road to great success.
It creates players of amazing perception and skill.
It operant conditions the technical and tactical habits necessary to play at the very top.
It recognizes that there is no way any human can learn all the techniques and tactics of soccer before they complete their youth career at age 18 and that to attempt to do so will only result in many poorly developed skills and little tactical understanding that can be used at the highest level.
It focuses on the skills and tactics that will make players the best they can be when they go to college and those skills that will help them make the professional ranks when they graduate.
And, most importantly, it is much more fun than any other way to learn the game.
The curriculum first focuses on the technical stage where all players work exclusively on the most creative and difficult dribbling and shooting skills of the game. It transitions into the 1 v 1 stage where they learn to dominate the immediate opponent. It then moves into the 2 v 2 stage where players are taught to combine with team mates to create, exploit or destroy goal scoring opportunities As a result mature Legend trained players are at home in both the offensive and defensive clutch and feel totally comfortable with making the big plays that determine the outcome of games, at both ends of the field.
In every practice players are challenged maximally in the four key developmental areas of technique, tactics, physiology and psychology so, for the first time ever, your club players have an opportunity to benefit from an approach that develops all four components of soccer to greatest degree in every single practice.
If you examine the Legends approach your paradigms will be challenged. The structure of almost everything in our curriculum is different from the norm.
The skills are different and more fun. The training area is small. The practice is crowded, we don't use bibs, we keep stats, we demand greedy "ball hog" play and we use many more unique methods to achieve our goal of creating the truly complete big playmaker.
If you analyze the Legends method your current philosophy will be questioned and challenged in ways you have never imagined and yet it all makes total sense.
Open your mind, and analyze carefully, because if you sign up for a Legends camp or book "Legends Soccer Camps" to run a summer camp for your club, your sons and daughters are in for the ride of their young soccer life.
"It is change, continuing change, inevitable change, that is the dominant factor in society today. No sensible decision can be made any longer without taking into account not only the world as it is, but the world as it will be...This, in turn, means that our statesmen, our businessmen, our everyman must take on a science fictional way of thinking." ...Isaac Asimov
